What can be done to combat an infectious disease pandemic?
-
Measures that can be undertaken to combat an infectious disease pandemic depend, to a varying degree, on the type of outbreak under consideration. In cases of water contaminated by pathogens such as cholera, measures will necessarily revolve around identifying and isolating sources of contamination and providing clean water to affected areas and populations. In cases of airborne viral infections such as influenza, primary importance has been placed on rapid development and deployment of an effective vaccine to groups at highest risk for poor outcomes as a result of infection - typically the very young, the very old, and the chronically ill. Pandemic outbreaks directly related to human behavior, such as AIDS, are addressed largely through education aimed at behavior modification.

Dr. Deborah Neiman answered:There is not just one answer because it depends on the type of disease and how it is spreading. So, I think the best answer is to stay informed by experts and listen and follow what they are saying. Some of the best places to follow would be the CDC website(center for disease control), the AMA website or your local medical society site - usually by state. Most of the time, these professional sites will give you the most up to date information on the what to do and how to avoid illness as best as possible.
What you do NOT want to do is listen to everyone else who might be telling you hearsay or their own opinions and you may get miss-information that may put you at risk. Get information on your own and make sure you are using professional and official sites or stations that are giving you the most up to date and correct information.
I think in this day and age that is the best answer because with technology today - we are able to give you detailed, up to date information and directions. Do not simply "hibernate" in your home and come out when you think it is safe - there are plenty of ways to find out the actual facts and follow the proper steps to make sure you stay safe and healthy.
