Emotional eating means that food is being used for something other than its intended purpose, as fuel for the body. College life can create the type of anxiety that emotional eating soothes, simply because there is such an onslaught of new experiences, people, and rituals to figure out and get used to. Nobody gets it all right. Whether it's bad grades, bad friends, bad habits, or even bad luck, college life presents a multitude of ways for you to go off course. When everything else in your life seems like a mess, food is something you choose for yourself. It can seem like you need food to help you socialize or to cope with stress or homesickness. Maybe you really are just craving a chocolate fix. Or maybe it has more to do with the crappy day you've been having, and the need for comfort, than any actual physical need.
