    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
A closed comedo is a raised, clogged pore. The plural of comedo is comedones, and they are also called whiteheads. Whiteheads occur when dead skin cells mix with sebum, an oily substance produced by the skin's sebaceous glands, and plug the pore, closing the opening. Acne is characterized by whiteheads, blackheads (also called open comedones), and inflamed red pimples or "zits."
