    A functional gastrointestinal disorder in which diarrhea is the predominant symptom is called chronic functional diarrhea. ROME II criteria for this syndrome include at least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of loose (mushy) or watery stools that are present over 3/4 of the time without abdominal pain.
