    Young age, female sex, and complete surgical removal (which is common) predict a better outcome in thyroid cancer. While a few different prognostic systems have been used, one which has been widely utilized for years is known as AMES. The AMES risk criteria include age, metastasis, extent, and size. Based on these four criteria, patients may be grouped into low- and high-risk groups that have been shown to be predictive of survival. Long-term survival rates between low- and high-risk groups ranged from 98% down to 47% in one major center's 50-year experience that included over 1,000 patients
