Urethritis, or inflammation of the urethra, has a few causes. The most common cause is a sexually transmitted infection. The infections that most commonly cause urethritis are gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes virus. Other causes of inflammation include contraceptive jelly, cream, or foam; spermicide used in condoms; and chemical irritation from soaps or lotions.
