    The moist, dark environment inside your shoes provides a perfect habitat for fungi. These simple plantlike organisms don't require sunlight. They also thrive on keratin, one of the proteins in toenails. Fungi are common, so it's easy to come in contact with them. Infections are normally spread in damp areas where many people congregate -- such as swimming pools and gyms, or even the shower or tub in your own home, if someone who uses it has the problem.
