Cracks in the teeth may form by eating hard objects like ice,  candy, or other hard foods. Accidents and trauma to the mouth can also cause cracks. Teeth grinding and clenching can contribute to the problem, along with a misaligned bite that puts too much pressure on any single tooth or teeth. Exposing teeth to extreme temperatures, such as eating something hot and then drinking ice water, or vice versa, can cause cracks. Contributing factors include brittle teeth that have undergone a root canal or osteoporosis (a disease of bone loss).
