Johns Hopkins Medicine answered:Chronic heartburn can lead to GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease. The symptoms of GERD include:
- a burning sensation in the abdomen
- regurgitation or the feeling of food coming up from the stomach into the esophagus
- chest pain
- difficulty swallowing
- belching or burping
- sour taste in the mouth
- stomach pain, especially in the upper portion of the stomach
These symptoms are caused by a weak muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, which normally prevents stomach contents from flowing backward into the esophagus, obesity, diet and lifestyle, hiatal hernia, poor emptying of the stomach or poor movement of the esophagus.
