What causes Shigella food poisoning?

Shigella food poisoning is caused by bacteria of a biological group (genus) named Shigella. The bacteria exist in the feces of infected individuals and may be transferred to other people through contaminated food. If a person consumes food that has been contaminated by Shigella bacteria, symptoms of the food poisoning usually occur within 12 to 50 hours.

Shigellosis occurs when someone ingest food or water contaminated with the bacteria shigella. It can get transferred to food when you cook food without washing your hands after using the bathroom. To prevent shigellosis, proper handwashing is key.
