The cause of permanent atrial fibrillation may be congestive heart failure, heart attack, high blood pressure, heart valve disease, hyperthyroidism, pericarditis, cardiomyopathy, or mitral regurgitation. Alcohol and certain medications are known triggers of atrial fibrillation, too. Permanent atrial fibrillation means the arrhythmia is unable to be converted to regular sinus node. At this point, the physician will prescribe medications to slow the heart rate and blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, and aspirin to prevent blood clots and stroke. Atrial fibrillation affects both men and women and becomes increasingly more common with aging.
