    The cause of HIV is a virus called the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is transmitted by bodily fluids that contain the virus. It can be spread by IV drug use, sex, infected blood products, etc. HIV suppresses the immune system. When you have HIV and get an infection that is not common in healthy people, this is usually called AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
