An embolic stroke is caused when a blood clot from the heart, aorta, or other source travels toward the brain, blocking a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain. Smaller clots may travel to smaller, more distant vessels of the brain and block them. Larger clots can block major vessels, such as the basilar artery or the middle cerebral artery stem. As a rule, the larger the artery blocked, the greater the damage. This type of stroke accounts for about 25% of all ischemic strokes.
