    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
Most congenital moles are considered a type of birthmark. When congenital moles are very large and appear on the torso, they are sometimes called a bathing-trunk nevi. (Nevi means mole.) Some experts believe that bathing trunk nevi are caused by problems that occur as a baby develops in the womb. Others think that the tendency to have bathing-trunk nevi is passed along in the genes. It's always wise to have a dermatologist evaluate a congenital mole.
