    Dr. Stuart Linder answered:

The causes of cellulite are three-fold. The first is associated with small areas of hills of fat that create the lumpiness. Next, the fibrous septae to the skin create pits as they pull the skin deep towards the muscle fascia. Finally, loss of collagen and elasticity of the skin cause the wrinkling effect. The newest FDA approved, single treatment laser (Cellulaze) is now used to treat moderate to severe cellulite. This laser is a 1440nm YAG laser that emulsifies the fat, subcises the fibrous septae, and thickens the dermis with increase collagen formation.
