    What causes bipolar II disorder is unknown, but genetics is a primary factor. If one or more of your parents has the mood disorder, you are more likely to develop bipolar disorder. Other contributing factors include stress, illness, death, or a job loss. Also, researchers believe that bipolar disorder may be caused in part by an imbalance in any or all of the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine.
