What causes a sprain?
-
Sprains are usually caused when you force a joint into a painful position that puts stress on the ligaments. This stress causes the ligaments to stretch or, in some cases, tear. Some of the most common causes of sprains include rolling or twisting your ankle, falling and landing on your wrist or hand, and pivoting your knee while playing sports. These actions will force the ligaments that connect your bones into unnatural positions, causing them to stretch or even tear.

Dr. Karen Gorton of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:A sprain is an injury to any ligament in the body. It is caused by increased, or too much, stress on the ligament. The ligament may stretch, tear partially or tear completely.
Stretching and partial tears may heal with rest and immobilization. Complete tears may need surgical intervention to repair the ligament.
