Skin care products and cosmetics are sometimes to blame when irritation occurs.

You can develop sensitivity to a new product or even to a product you have used for a long time. To find out what may be causing the irritation, you must stop using as many products as possible. Stop using all products you currently apply to your face, including cleansers, moisturizers, makeup, scrubs, acne products, and anti-aging products.

It is especially important to stop using perfumed products. Avoid fragrant lotions or soaps. And don't spray perfume around your neck and upper chest. Avoid using perfumed hair spray. Use an unscented soap to wash your face and an unscented moisturizer for dry skin.

Look at what touches your face in addition to skin care products and cosmetics. Avoid using washcloths to wash your face. They may contain detergent that didn't rinse out in the washing machine. Use your hands instead. Avoid fragrant detergents for washing towels, sheets, and pillowcases. Avoid fabric softeners. Put your clothing through an extra rinse cycle to rinse out any excess detergent.

Although your symptoms sound like something doctors call "contact sensitivity," other skin conditions can cause redness and flaking. It is important to see your doctor for the correct diagnosis and treatment. Your doctor will help you find the cause of the irritation and can prescribe a cream that will help your skin heal. Once your skin heals, you can try your facial products again. But try them one-by-one, to find which one caused the irritation.
