The term “optimal aging” refers to a set of ideas that as one ages one can be in control of ones wellbeing. There are several concepts that “optimal aging” incorporates. There is the physical component that suggests that as one ages you should maintain and even improve your health by exercising, sleeping well, and practicing in preventive methods of care. There is also a social component that states that there should be a health positive social environment that one regularly engages in. This can include a healthy marriage, positive relationships with family members, attending social events and having friends/companions. There is also an emotional aspect, which focuses on the positive expression and responsiveness of emotion. Furthermore, there is a component that suggests that one should actively pursue hobbies and engage in self-rewarding activities. Also, it suggests that developing a spiritual environment can be beneficial to the aging body. Lastly, there is an intellectual aspect that focuses on maintaining and growing the capabilities of ones cognitive mechanisms.
