Here is a good calf exercise for beginners: Stand with your toes on a thick phonebook, bricks, or a step, supporting yourself against a wall or railing. Slowly let your heels down as far as you can. Hold a beat and feel the stretch in the backs of your legs. Then rise up on your toes. Hold a beat and lower. Repeat to exhaustion. This can also be used as a stretching exercise by lowering your heels as far as they'll go.
