Most of the body's waste products are the by-products of the air we breathe and the food we eat. However, our intestinal tracts are full of bacteria and yeast that also produce waste. These bacteria and yeast are often called gut flora or intestinal microbes. Some of these bacteria are highly beneficial. They assist in the digestion of some vitamins and they play a significant role in our immune response. About 100 trillion (three pounds) of these bacteria live in the intestinal tracts of virtually every human on earth. In fact, we have more of these microbes living in our intestinal tract than we have cells in our body (only about 80 trillion). These bacteria are either good for you, bad for you, or neutral.
