However, condoms, while they are way more effective than not using birth control at all, are not the best or most effective against pregnancy.
In general, the less you have to do about birth control everyday or even every time you have sex, the better the birth control works at preventing pregnancy. For women who still want to be able to have a pregnancy later when the time is right, the most effective birth control is an intrauterine device or IUD. Also very effective are the pills, patch and vaginal ring that contain hormones.

With either of these methods approximately 1/1000 women become pregnant annually. On the birth control pill, 1/100 women become pregnant annually and this is with perfect (not typical) use.
None of the above methods prevent STD transmission. The only methods proven to decrease STD risk are male or female condoms and abstinence.

You have to use them EVERY time you have sex but they are the easily available and don't require a doctor's perscription. Thankfully however, we do have some excellent ways to prevent unplanned pregnancies and infections. Use condoms EVERY time you have sex to prevent infection. I recommend very reliable, long-term birth control for teenagers who want to finish high school and college - IUDs (up to 5-10 yrs.) and Implanon (up to 3 years) are great options - talk with your doctor to see if you are a candidate for these options.
