In addition to its appearance, a completely-in-the-canal (CIC) hearing aid (the smallest, least visible hearing aid) has advantages over most of the larger models. Because the CIC hearing aid lies deep in the ear, it doesn't need as much volume as other hearing aids to give you the same degree of hearing improvement. This deep fitting allows the "pinna effect," by which the outer ear helps you locate where a sound is coming from, to remain intact. CIC hearing aids can be very comfortable to wear when talking on the telephone, as the aid doesn't bump up against the receiver.
