Thyroid nodules are most commonly sporadic growths that arise from cells within the thyroid. The majority of them are benign and their frequency increases with age. If you or your doctor palpate a growth within your thyroid it is often necessary to gather more information using an ultrasound. Depending on your personal history and the nodules appearance on ultrasound a biopsy may be necessary. The important point is that once discovered appropriate follow up is put in place by your primary care physician.
