What are coronary arteries?

American Heart Association answered:The coronary arteries are two arteries arising from the aorta that arch down over the top of the heart and branch out in additional arteries that provide blood to the heart muscle.

Dr. Joaquin Solis of Aurora Health Care answered:Heart muscle needs its own supply of blood and oxygen to keep pumping. Blood is carried to heart muscle by blood vessels known as coronary arteries.
There are two main coronary arteries, left and right, which branch off of the large artery (aorta) as it leaves the left ventricle. The left coronary artery branches again into two large branches: the left anterior descending (LAD) branch and left circumflex branch.
The right and two left coronary arteries and their many branches wrap around the surface of the heart. They keep the heart muscle supplied with oxygen-rich blood.Heart muscle needs its own supply of blood and oxygen to keep pumping. Brigham and Women's Hospital answered:The two main coronary arteries (arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle) are the left main and right coronary arteries. The left main coronary artery (LMCA), which divides into the left anterior descending artery and the circumflex branch, supplies blood to the left ventricle and left atrium. The right coronary artery (RCA), which divides into the right posterior descending and acute marginal arteries, supplies blood to the right ventricle, right atrium, sinoatrial node (cluster of cells in the right atrial wall that regulates the heart's rhythmic rate), and atrioventricular node.
Additional arteries branch off the left main coronary artery to supply the left side of the heart muscle with blood. These include the following:
- circumflex artery (Cx) -- The circumflex artery branches off the left coronary artery and encircles the heart muscle. This artery supplies blood to the lateral side and back of the heart.
- left anterior descending artery (LAD) -- The left anterior descending artery branches off the left coronary artery and supplies blood to the front of the left side of the heart.

Healthwise answered:Coronary arteries are vessels that provide oxygen-rich blood and other nutrients to the heart muscle. The two main coronary blood vessels, which branch from the body's main artery (aorta), are the right coronary artery (RCA) and the left coronary artery (LCA).
The coronary arteries attach to and wrap around the heart's surface. The left side of the heart is larger and more muscular because it pumps blood to the rest of the body. The left coronary artery branches off into smaller arteries:
- Left anterior descending artery.
- Left circumflex artery, which encircles the heart muscle.
The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs and related structures. The right marginal branch usually extends from the right coronary artery and supplies blood to the lower side of the heart.

Intermountain Healthcare answered:The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. They branch off the base of the aorta (the largest artery in the body). This allows your heart -- the most important muscle in your body -- to be the first organ to receive oxygen-rich blood pumped out of the left ventricle. The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle.
