Stacy Wiegman answered:Anabolic steroids are synthetic male sex hormones that help the body build tissue by affecting certain chemical processes in the body and by increasing the body's production of protein. Available only by prescription, they are used to treat some hormone disorders in men; certain types of anemia; certain types of breast cancer; some diseases that hinder blood clotting; certain kinds of growth disorders; Turner's syndrome, which is a sex chromosome disorder in women, and hereditary angioedema, which causes a person's bowels, sexual organs, arms, legs, throat, windpipe or face to swell. Anabolic steroids also are used to help people with severe injuries, illnesses, infections or other medical issues to gain weight and rebuild muscle as they recover. This medication should only be used as directed by your doctor. Misuse, such as to enhance athletic performance, is illegal and unsafe.

National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:Anabolic steroids are natural or synthetic derivatives of the sex hormone testosterone. Anabolic steroids increase the tissue building process by up regulating several chemical processes in the body and by especially increasing the body’s ability to retain nitrogen and build up protein tissues and nitrogen retention. In clinical settings anabolic steroids are prescribed for men and boys with deficient levels of testosterone, certain wasting diseases, breast cancers, and people with HIV. Anabolic steroids are also prescribed to help people recovering from severe injuries such as burn patients, traumatic injuries, severe infections, anemia, and frailty to help them recover and build up their bodies. Currently, in the United States it is illegal to obtain and use anabolic steroids without a prescription from a licensed medical professional. The long term effects of anabolic steroid use are not known as no long term studies of its usage have been conducted.
