Stacy Wiegman answered:Amiloride-hydrochlorothiazide is a combination of two active ingredients used as a treatment for high blood pressure, edema (fluid retention) and heart failure. Amiloride is called a potassium-sparing diuretic and it increases water and sodium excretion with decreased excretion of potassium in the urine. Hydrochlorothiazide, abbreviated HCTZ, is called a thiazide diuretic that increases water excretion with increased excretion of sodium in the urine. The combination works by reducing blood volume as the excess water is excreted.
