Crowns made from all porcelain or porcelain fused to metal are alternatives to metal dental crowns.

Dentists use dental crowns to cover and restore a damaged or decayed tooth. Dental crowns also strengthen a tooth and can enhance the look of your smile.

Porcelain or porcelain and metal dental crowns are typically more expensive than all metal crowns but they offer an alternative for people who want a natural looking smile. A crown made with porcelain has the tint and color of a tooth.

Another alternative to metal crowns, are those made from indirect composite of plastic and are the color of teeth. Indirect composite is similar to the material used to fill a cavity. These crowns aren't as strong as porcelain, but they wear well without damaging nearby teeth.

The least expensive crowns are prefabricated ones that are not custom made for a particular tooth. Prefabricated crowns are made of plastic or stainless steel and are often used as a temporary capping for a tooth until it can be replaced with a permanent crown.
