What are the advantages of simultaneous breast reconstruction?

Dr. Michele Manahan of Johns Hopkins Medicine answered:Simultaneous breast reconstruction is reconstruction of the breasts that is done at the same time as the surgery to remove the cancer. The patient wakes up with a breast mound already in place, having been spared the experience of seeing herself with no breast at all. The process is done in the shortest time possible instead of being a series of complex surgeries that take place over a length of time.

Dr. Stuart Linder answered:The major advantage of simultaneous breast reconstruction is psychological in nature. Patients who undergo mastectomy without immediate reconstruction may have a higher incidence of depression due to a loss of the breast with severe asymmetry postoperative. Immediate concurrent breast reconstruction will reduce asymmetry and may greatly enhance the woman's self-esteem acutely directly after this breast cancer mastectomy procedure. Psychologically, a woman who awakes without an entire breast may require psychological intervention which may be reduced by immediate reconstruction.
