    American Heart Association answered:

Abnormal glucose tolerance is the inability to use blood sugar adequately. The body derives its energy from glucose, which is transported to the cells by insulin. Glucose is another word for sugar. Patients with diabetes do not produce enough insulin or the insulin does not do its job properly and so the sugar builds up in their blood.
