    Discovery Health answered:

Doctors generally switch on the deep brain stimulation (DBS) device and program it to suit a patient's individual needs several days after the surgery.

Adjustments can be made to the electrical stimulation pattern of the device, such as the pulse strength, shape and frequency. The patient must come in every few months so their doctors can make any needed adjustments to ensure optimal performance.
