An ultrasound test uses sound waves instead of x rays to estimate bone density. It is frequently performed on the heel bone and is less expensive than x-ray methods such as the DXA test. Although it can be used to predict your risk of bone fracture, it may not be widely accepted in determining your bone loss in the hip or spine. Even so, it may be a safe way to complement other bone-density tests.
