On an acute level, 30 minutes of sustained, moderately vigorous exercise seems to have the most immediate impact on brain chemistry and cognitive functioning. Intensity does seem to matter; the more intense the activity, to a point, the more pronounced the influence on brain chemistry. Whether activities such as resistance training are as effective remains to be seen; most likely, any type of exercise -- brisk walking, jogging, or pumping iron -- will be beneficial if it raises the heart rate, keeps it elevated, and brings a bit of sweat to the brow.
