What is the treatment for a yeast rash in babies?
-
Dr. Tanya Remer Altmann answered:Getting rid of a yeast infection requires a special cream to clear it up. I find that using a prescription ointment containing a combination of 3 ingredients—an antifungal medication to clear up the yeast along with zinc oxide and petroleum jelly to protect the skin and help it heal—works especially well. Alternatively, your pediatrician may advise you to layer an over-the-counter yeast cream with a zinc oxide diaper cream on top with every diaper change. While you are waiting for the rash to go away, soaking in an oatmeal
bath can help soothe your baby’s sore bottom.

Dr. Carla King of Capital Area Health Network answered:Yeast rash in infants most commonly occurs in the diaper area. This is a great place for yeast to grow due to the excessive moisture in this region. The first line of treatment is zinc oxide which can be purchased over the counter in various forms. Also white petrolatum ointment (Vaseline, Aquaphor) can be used and is safe for all ages even newborns. If this does not resolve the rash then an antifungal cream (Nystatin) can be used up to four times per day. Yeast rash in the diaper area can be prevented with frequent diaper changes.Yeast rash in infants most commonly occurs in the diaper area.
