Treatment for a cerebral contusion (a bruise on the brain) often requires hospital admission so that the individual can be observed. If the head injury is severe, the individual may be treated in intensive care where the doctor can monitor blood pressure and oxygen; administer pain medication or supplemental oxygen; treat seizures or fever; or provide sedation and mechanical assistance for breathing. Recovery from a cerebral contusion can be slow, and the individual will need plenty of rest and good nutrition.
