Is stem cell transplantation used to treat lymphomas?
-
Stem cell transplantation might be used for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in which symptoms are present and the cancer is aggressive or in cases when Hodgkin's lymphoma reoccurs. The stem cells that create healthy blood cells are removed from your body and preserved. Very high doses of radiation and or chemotherapy are then given to kill off all of the cancerous cells in your system, and then the healthy stem cells are reintroduced back into your system. It is possible that a donor may need to be used for the healthy stem cells following the treatment.
