Practicing good oral hygiene is a good preventative measure for many oral health problems. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, eating a well-balanced diet and seeing your dentist regularly. Unfortunately it is not possible to entirely prevent canker sores.

    Joan Haizlip answered:
You can prevent canker sores by knowing the 'triggers' that cause them.  For some people these triggers are:
    - spicy, salty, or acidic foods like pretzels, chips, grapefruits, oranges and pineapple
    - talking and eating at the same time

It's also important to use good oral hygiene.  Brush your teeth after you eat and use dental floss.  Using a soft toothbrush can also prevent irritation of your mouth.
