Absolutely.  In fact, Emergency Departments and Emergency Physicians specialize in treating life-threatening illnesses and injuries.  Sometimes this consists of stabilizing and transferring the patient for definitive care elsewhere, and sometimes this consists of resuscitation and further treatment directly in the ER.  The job of the Emergency Physician and Emergency Nurse is to get the severely ill or injured person through the "Golden Hour" which is the first critical hour after the onset of injury or illness.
