  1. There are two types of tests used to detect pregnancy: blood tests and urine tests. Both types detect pregnancy by testing for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG. This hormone is only produced if a fertilized egg implants in the lining of the uterus, which usually takes at least a week after fertilization. Urine tests can be done by a doctor or by a woman at her home. Home pregnancy tests usually mean putting the testing stick into the stream of urine or collecting urine in a cup and then putting the stick in the cup. After 10 minutes or so, results will show up. However, urine tests aren't always sensitive enough to detect hCG very early in pregnancy, so you may have to wait for an extra week or so after missing your period to get an accurate result from a home pregnancy test. A doctor can do a blood test, and it's much more sensitive so it may detect pregnancy earlier.

You can get a home pregnancy urine test and look to see if the answer is positive or negative or you can get a blood or urine pregnancy test with your health care provider. The most important thing to remember is to get prenatal care as early as possible and to take care of yourself like the result was positive just in case the first test was negative because you were too early to test.
