C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is produced by the liver and is a marker for inflammation. Elevations in hs-CRP are associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack). If you do not have heart disease, having an hs-CRP performed may help you better understand your risk for developing heart disease in the future. If you already have heart disease there is currently no proven benefit to having an hs-CRP performed. At this time, there is no known treatment for a high hs-CRP.
