As a teen, why should I stop wearing my contacts if I have an eye injury?

Dr. David Demartini answered:There are so many different types of eye injury it makes it difficult to answer this question specifically.
Generally, contact lenses are a great way to correct vision but they are sitting on the surface of the eye which can lead to other problems, especially infection. Anything that alters the routine use of the contacts can make the eye more prone to infection or irritation by the contacts. Therefore, most eye doctors say to leave the contacts off until the injury or its subsequent problems have resolved. Glasses do not sit on the eye and are not likely to cause any additional problems. This is why they are preferred over contacts after injury. Your eye doctor can tell you when to resume using the contacts.
