Your dentist knows all about dental implants, even if he or she does not do them. Since oral surgeons usually do the implant procedures, they are also very good sources of information about implants. Periodontists and prosthodontists are excellent sources of information as well. Other people who have had implants placed can also be a great resource for you to learn from their experiences.

The first person to talk to is your general dentist. If he/she does not place them, they can refer you to a dentist or specialist who does. Your dentist can provide you with any information or answer any questions you may have.

    Dr. Jennifer Robb answered:
You should start by talking to your own dentist (usually a general dentist). He or she will likely know something about them even if he or she does not perform the procedure. Your dental office will also be able to direct you to local dental specialists, usually oral surgeons or periodontists, who can provide additional information about dental implants.

    Dr. Ned Nippoldt answered:

Talk to your general dentist about dental implants first. He/she is in the best position to look at your complete oral health situation and discuss your options with you. If an implant (or implants) fit into the overall plan, the dentist can review the pros and cons, and answer questions you may have. If your general dentist doesn't place the implants, he/she will provide you with a referral to a specialist who does. Using your general dentist as the "hub" will allow your general dentist to communicate with the specialist any particular concerns he has about your specific situation. After the implant(s) has integrated, you will return to the general dentist for the final prosthetic (implant- supported crown, bridge, or denture). There is a better chance that the final aesthetic outcome of your implant investment will be to your liking when the professionals take the time to communicate with each other regarding your case.
