Synthroid is usually used to treat hypothyroidism. With the exception of a few cases, hypothyroidism does not have a cure at this time. Most patients need to take the medication and be monitored for life. The dose you need may change with time, so it is important to have regular blood tests to check your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels and follow-up with your doctor. If there comes a time where you do not feel you need the medication anymore, do not stop taking it. Make an appointment to discuss possibly changing your dose to see how it affects your TSH levels. Only make changes with the knowledge and consent of your physician.
