Warts appear as thickend areas of skin that can be discolored and raised. Most warts do not hurt, however, on certain parts of the body, such as the feet, warts are often flat and can potentially be painful. You should consult a dermatologist if you see any changes in your skin.

    Dr. Robin Miller answered:
Warts are generally painless growths that form as a result of infection from the human papillomavirus. They are flesh colored and rough textured. They can appear on the hands, feet, genitals and the face and legs.

Many warts will disappear without treatment. However, home treatments such as duct tape and over the counter salicylic acid can be very effective for warts on the hands, feet and legs. If they do not respond to home remedies, your doctor can use liquid nitrogen. For genital warts, podophyllin, a prescription medication is the most effective treatment.
