Why should I swaddle my newborn baby?

Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:The major reason that swaddling is so important is that it helps limit the startle reflex, so babies don’t wake themselves up. You can swaddle your newborn for much of the day when he’s sleeping or resting and loosen the reins as he stays awake longer and seems curious about moving around, starting at about three months. Swaddling is very effective for cranky babies, since the reason they’re fussy is often that they actually want to sleep but can’t calm themselves down.

Dr. Ian Holzman of The Mount Sinai Medical Center answered:Swaddling babies has been going on for as long as people have had babies. Babies seem to find it comforting to have their arms and legs tight against their body for extended periods of the day and night. Since that is the position most babies are in while in the womb, this is likely something their brains have gotten used to. It is a position that retains warmth and decreases calorie expenditure, so it probably adds to the growth of the infant as well.Swaddling babies has been going on for as long as people have had babies. (Still others think that the full-body swaddle seems more like a straitjacket than anything else.)
