Clayton of Intermountain Healthcare answered:Most surgical complications can be prevented in emergency procedures if your doctor pays attention to every detail in his repair, and follows the "best practices" guidelines for management of the situation. While not every complication can be prevented, the majority can by careful cleaning of the wound, debriding or trimming away of damaged tissues, and careful repair in layers of tissue and skin. The judicious use of antibiotics is often helpful as well, but antibiotics are not a substitute for detailed and accurate repair of the injury.
