    Dr. Stuart Linder answered:
The surgeon will certainly work concurrently with a critical care practitioner. The critical care physician normally follows the surgical patient both before and after surgery in the hospital. Laboratories, x-rays, ekg, and diagnostic testing are reviewed both by the surgeon and the internal medicine specialist. Other specialist may include: pulmonolgy, cardiology, neurology, hematology, and medical oncology.

This depends on what type of surgery someone has.  If extensive enough to require intensive care admission, then generally the surgeon will work with a critical care practitioner in a team approach.
