What supplements are good for someone on a vegan diet?

Audrey Quick - NASM Elite Trainer answered:A good supplement for someone on a vegan diet is B12. B12 is manufactured by bacteria, and our good hygiene practices (municipally treated water, washing of food and hands) means that we aren't ingesting enough B12 in modern society. Our animals aren't so fastidious, so they are consuming B12, and as a consequence meat eaters do get more B12 in their diets than those following a plant-based diet.Helpful? 1 person found this helpfulA good supplement for someone on a vegan diet is B12. Ms. Vandana Sheth of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics answered:Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal products. This might be a nutrient that you could consider using a supplement if you are on a vegan diet. However, as long as you are including foods that are fortified with Vitamin B12, Calcium, Vitamin D, you do not need a supplement.Helpful? 1 person found this helpfulVitamin B12 is primarily found in animal products. Ximena Jimenez of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics answered:The nutritional concerns for someone on a vegan diet are vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D and omega 3. A multivitamin may be a good idea as a health insurance. I would also recommend a vitamin D supplement if exposure to sunlight is limited. The nutritional concerns for someone on a vegan diet are vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D and omega 3.
