Epiretinal membrane is a fibrous proliferation over the surface of the inner retina. If surgery is required, this membrane is peeled off the surface of the retina as best possible after the overlying vitreous humor is removed. Because the retina is a very delicate tissue it is very tricky and delicate to successfully peel this tissue of the retina without damaging the retina. As a result sometimes all the membrane cannot be completely peeled or the wrinkling of the retina is not fully relieved and vision is not completely restored to normal. Most of the time significantly improved vision is possible after this surgery.
