Can stress management techniques affect coronary artery disease?

    For reversing heart disease, our research indicated that those who spent at least one hour per day on the stress-management techniques used in these studies (including yoga-based stretching, breathing techniques, meditation, and imagery, and participation in the support group) showed the greatest amount of improvement in their coronary artery disease.

    However, you may not need to spend as much time practicing stress-management techniques if you’re just trying to stay healthy or lose a few pounds. Even practicing a few minutes a day has benefits.

    Surprisingly, given the limitations of self-reported data, we found a direct dose-response correlation with the frequency and duration of practicing stress-management techniques and changes in coronary artery blockages. We found this after one year and again after five years. Again, the more people changed, the more improvements we measured. The improvements in coronary artery blockages due to stress-management techniques appear to be independent of changes in diet.
